Investing in commodities?

I'm interested in investing in commodities in the near future. I'm mostly interested in investing in silver. I have a few extra thousand dollars that I'd like to play around with for the sole purpose of getting me started as a first time investor to sort of "get my feet wet" and see how it all works. I'm here to hopefully get a few views from different people on what would be the best way for me to get started. Any info you could provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
