Why is it important for a work of art to have a focal point?

i feel like it depends on the artwork in question. sometimes i try to draw pictures with either no set focal point, or many varied focal points. the intention of a focal point, in my opinion, is to help a viewer to see the art in the same way that i do. in a way, its similar to writing a story, you want the reader to understand what the narrative is. but on the other hand, i think its not as obligatory to have a focal point in a drawing, for me, because i draw for myself. viewers be damned...
