Why would a guy do this?

He likes you. But think back. Did you make any weird faces or any type of uninviting body language that would make him take his hug back? Did you hug him back immediately after he initiated it? If not it probably hurt his feelings in a certain way. But, if he shows further signs that he likes you then you should explain to him that you just want to be friends.
